Oregon Wine Tasting -- Nov 21, 2010

Drove out for a day of wine tasting in the Willamette Valley, near Carlton.Visited four wineries; Lemelson, Belle Pente, Scott Paul and Tyrus Evan. Gray, dreary day, but, great wines at all. Poor hound dogs had to hunker down in the car most of the afternoon.

Dog Mtn -- Nov 14, 2010

A fall day hiking up Dog Mountain -- would say it was fine if not for the rain. Day was one of those where the clouds were hanging down around 2000', was actually really nice hiking up to the point when we headed into the clouds. Then, a steady soaking rain with a decent bit of wind. This trip, Echo and I made the full loop - he is getting accustomed the rain.

Dog Mtn -- Oct 24, 2010

Got one of the MtnDogs out for a hike on this Sunday. Forecast was for heavy rain and high winds - they were not joking. Echo and I made it up to the 2500' and started the final climb into a howling headwind and driving rain, rising above a sheltering ridge. Echo keep bolting for shelter behind any tree or boulder he could find. I felt so sorry for Echo that we turned back and did not complete the loop -- too difficult to get any photos. Now if only we had some beagle goggles!

Scattering Remains - Enterprise, OR - Nov 7, 2010

Traveled to Enterprise, OR to scatter the remains of Kay, my step mother. Nov 7, 2010 was exactly one year after her passing. The rains let up on Sunday morn and started up right again after placing the final bit in the Wallowa River. I left a little bit in four
different spots in the area around Enterprise; at the cemetery, a hill above Chief Joseph's grave overlooking Wallowa Lake, at Wallowa Lake State Park where numerous family reunions took place and in the Wallowa River. Arrived Saturday night and the MtnDogs stayed at the Wilderness Inn.

National Beagle Club Specialty - Oct 3 - 8, 2010

The National Beagle Club Specialty was held in Vancouver, WA this October, www.nbcspecialty.com. Very fortunate for us that a national show was held across the river from our hometown. Even more fortunate, we had TeamBeagle in town to show us the ropes, the eventual Trial Champions. See Brew (Starbuck Torbay Full Sail) on the specialty website, 2nd dog down.

Oregon Symphony & Hilary Hahn - Oct 2, 2010

Attended the season opener for the Oregon Symphony on Saturday night, Oct 2. What a great performance. Guest violinist was Hilary Hahn
( http://www.hilaryhahn.com/ ), playing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the symphony. Her playing brings tears to your eyes.

The bright lights of downtown Portland.

Three Sisters Wilderness, OR - Sept 25 - 26, 2010

Finally got out for an overnight backpack trip with the MtnDogs. Beautiful sunny weekend. Saturday was great, beyond Echo trying dig a big hole to sleep in at camp rather than laying on the fancy hiking pad we brought along for him. Sunday was a challenge, 7 hours of continuous barking after scenting a single horse just 15 minutes out of camp. Our destination was Linton Meadows on the west side of the Three Sisters in central Oregon, here is a link to google maps with approximate location of our camp. Hike was about 8 miles one way.

Here we are at Frog Camp trailhead, seems like somebody changed the name. A sure sign of getting old, when one has been hiking so long that the names of places change!

View from camp in the morning

A lone rider on a horse passed by at the edge of the meadow, chaos ensued when the MtnDogs got scent of it. Wished I'd gotten a shot of the horse.

Elk Cove Trail - Mt Hood Wilderness, Oregon - Sept 13, 2010

A fine Sunday for a hike, finally got one of those bluebird days. Hiked the Elk Cove Trail to a beautiful meadow at the base of Mt Hood. 5.1 miles one way, 2700' elevation gain. Hike was on the spine of a ridge, mostly in the woods. One awesome viewpoint about halfway and the end of the trail is a huge meadow with great views of the mountain.

Shot from the car on the drive up - darn near the trailhead.

Shot from the viewpoint about halfway up. Nice contrasty photo, if only all were like this.

Rather stern looking fellow -- hmmm. I'm thinking Pink Floyd -- If you don't eat your meat, how can you have any pudding? How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?

Shot from Elk Cove, nice little lunch spot.

Here is the Roddy Dog, couple of happy hikers.
